Hal McCoy, of The Dayton Daily News, reports Cincinnati Reds owner Bob Castellini is committed to a payroll in the mid-$80 million range that would be a modest increase over this year's payroll of $74 million. A significant portion of that must go for contractual raises for 2B Brandon Phillips and SP Aaron Harang, SP Bronson Arroyo and CL Francisco Cordero.
Gopheritis transformed Harang from a Top 5 fantasy starter into a liability. The Reds right-hander surrendered 35 homers, the second-most in baseball, behind only Brandon Backe's total of 36. If there's one silver lining, it's that Harang still throws strikes, which makes him a prime bounceback candidate in 2009.
Cincinnati Reds SP Aaron Harang allowed six runs (four earned) on nine hits over five innings Saturday, Sept. 27, against the St. Louis Cardinals, according to The Associated Press. He walked one and struck out two, falling to 6-17 on the season.
Aaron Harang fell to 6-17 after allowing six runs – four earned – in five innings against the Cardinals on Sunday. Troy Glaus and Felipe Lopez hit the 34th and 35th homers given up by Harang this year. That total could have led the majors, but Brandon Backe also surrendered two today, increasing his total allowed to 36. Harang still ends September with a 3.07 ERA in six starts. His season ERA is 4.78, but he should do a lot better than that next year if he can stay healthy.

Analysis: Harang hasn't been the ace you expected this season and he finished on another down note, but we still have high hopes for him heading into 2009. He should once again be considered a top 25 option on Draft Day 2009
