Wainwright throws eight strong as Cards win

Adam Wainwright shackled the Houston Astros for eight innings and Yadier Molina had two hits and two RBI to help spoil Wandy Rodriguez's first start in more than a month in the St. Louis Cardinals' 6-1 victory on Wednesday night. Rodriguez (1-1) made his first start since going on the 15-day disabled list on April 20 with a strained left groin and labored over 4 2/3 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) and six hits with four walks. His lone strikeout was on a third-strike bunt attempt by Wainwright in the fourth.

He struck out five and walked two. "It was important for me to bear down and really make pitches. That's one thing I didn't do the last two times I pitched," Wainwright said. "The wins haven't been there for him, but the performance has," Cardinals second baseman Adam Kennedy said. "He's pitched great. He should have about six or seven wins by now. It just hasn't worked out."

Adam Wainwright endured his second straight shaky outing against Tampa Bay Saturday, allowing four runs on 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings while being aided by a pickoff and a runner caught stealing. The Cardinals' opening-day starter gave up six earned runs in six innings in his previous outing at Milwaukee.

It was the shortest of his six starts perhaps because he was coming off throwing 126 pitches in a complete-game victory over the Astros on Saturday. He doubled for his sixth hit of the year and scored on Brendan Ryan's single for a 2-0 lead in the second. Wainwright, who walked one and struck out five, was in line for his fourth win before Jason Isringhausen blew a 3-1 lead in the ninth.
