Cintron briefly held the starting shortstop slot for the Orioles. He succeeded Luis Hernandez and Freddie Bynum and subsequently lost the job to Juan Castro. The opportunity remains for him to return in a reserve role, but Baltimore appears ready to try a different starting solution.

Spencer Fordin, of MLB.com, reports Baltimore Orioles SS Alex Cintron filed for free agency Friday, Oct. 31.

Shortstop is a black hole within the Orioles organization, and a solution will likely be found externally. Don't expect anything from this group of underwhelming hitters in 2009.

This was just the third multi-hit effort for Cintron since Aug. 1, so while he may be Baltimore's default shortstop, he's far from reliable. The RBIs were Nos. 9 and 10.
