Rios' decision to take part in the Classic convinced the outfielder not to play for Criollos de Caguas in the Puerto Rico Winter League this offseason. Instead, Rios intends on preparing for the upcoming season and spending time with his family, which now includes his daughter Alessandra, born in July.
Jordan Bastian, of MLB.com, reports Toronto Blue Jays OF Alex Rios will play in the World Baseball Classic for Puerto Rico. Rios will not be playing in the Puerto Rican Winter League.
Rios' power numbers dropped off significantly, but his second-half surge (.542 SLG) bodes well for a return to 20-plus homers in '09.
News: The Sports Xchange notes that RF Alex Rios leads the American League with 38 extra-base hits since the All-Star break. On the season, he ranks fifth in the league in doubles with 46 and triples with eight.
Analysis: Rios also is just the fifth player in club history to record 15 home runs, drive in 75 runs and steal 30 bases in a single season. The other Blue Jays to do so were Raul Mondesi (2001), Jose Cruz Jr. (2001), Shawn Green (1998), and Roberto Alomar (1993). He might never hit 35 bombs as was expected of him, but he looks like a must-start Fantasy OF in all formats
News: Toronto OF Alex Rios had a big night against the Orioles on Wednesday. Rios went 2-for-4 with his 15 home run and added a double. He drove in three runs on the night for Toronto in the victory.
Analysis: Rios has shown more power in the second half after looking like strictly a base stealer in the first half. He might never hit 35 bombs, but he looks like a must-start Fantasy OF in all formats
