News: With the trade of Huston Street in the Matt Holliday blockbuster, the A's appear comfortable with Brad Ziegler and Joey Devine competing for or sharing the closer's role in 2009.
Analysis: Ziegler figures to have the first shot at the job, but we think Devine will eventually take over full-time. Consider either of these young arms viable sleepers at the closer spot in all Fantasy leagues and both will be effective Rotisserie options even if they don't save games. We like Devine's stuff better, but it is real tough to argue with Ziegler's results in his rookie year. He baffles hitters with a real deceptive delivery
The Associated Press reports Oakland Athletics CL Brad Ziegler blew the save Monday, Sept. 22. Manager Bob Geren told him he would get a break Tuesday.
News: Athletics closer Brad Ziegler served up a solo home run to Hank Blalock to blow his second save Monday at Texas. He allowed three hits in two-thirds of an inning. "I felt good enough to get outs. I made the one bad pitch to Blalock, and he took advantage of it. It was a fastball away," said Ziegler, who added he would be ready to pitch again Tuesday if needed.
Analysis: Meanwhile, Joey Devine pitched a scoreless eighth inning Monday. Ziegler worked the eighth inning and Devine the ninth for the save Sunday, so who knows what the Athletics are thinking with their closer situation? We can only say Devine's stock continues to rise, and Ziegler's continues to fall. Neither player deserves to start in mixed leagues right now
Brad Ziegler blew a save on Monday night when he entered the ninth inning of a 3-2 game against the Rangers and gave up a leadoff home run to Hank Blalock. It was just the second homer Zieger has allowed in 58 innings this year, but it was costly. Ziegler then gave up a single to Nelson Cruz before getting a pair of outs on a ground-ball double play -- his specialty -- but was pulled after surrendering a triple to Frank Catalanotto in the next at-bat. Ziegler had handled the eighth inning a day before with Joey Devine picking up his first career save, but the two reversed roles again tonight.Related: Joey Devine
Hank Blalock had another big night at the plate producing three hits and two runs, with one of his hits being a ninth inning home run off of the A's Brad Ziegler to send the game into extra innings (the Rangers lost 4-3 in 11).Blalock has a hit in each of his last four games during which time he has gone 10-for-18 (.556) with two home runs and seven RBI. Hopefully you have him active for the final week of the '08 campaign cause he is smoking right now.
None.
Numbers in parenthesis for each team indicates total runs scored that game. Numbers next to each pitcher indicates earned runs.
The run differential is based on total runs each team scored when Brad Ziegler has a decision. (i.e. win/loss) Similarly, the opposing pitcher listed also received a decision.
