News: Right-hander Brandon Duckworth signed a one-year contract with the Royals on Monday and was sent outright to Triple-A Omaha. The 32-year-old Duckworth will make a salary based on $600,000 while he's on the Royals and $300,000 if he's in the minors. The move leaves the Royals with 38 players on the 40-man roster.
Analysis: Duckworth spent most of last season with Omaha but went 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in seven starts for Kansas City. The Royals said he will attend the team's major league camp this spring training. Consider him nothing more than a high-risk starter or low-end middle reliever for the deepest of AL-only leagues at this point in his career
After closing out the 2008 season with three quality starts, the veteran right-hander will be invited to Spring Training in March. The odds of him winning a rotation spot are slim.

Duckworth, who turns 33 this winter, has seen action with Kansas City in three straight years. He went 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA in seven starts for Kansas City last season.
