News: Arizona SP Brandon Webb (19-7) issued a career-high six walks while failing in his third attempt to reach 20 wins for the first time in his career on Saturday against the Dodgers. Webb allowed seven runs on five hits over just 5 2/3 innings. He did strike out six men.
Analysis: Webb is letting the pressure of 20 wins get to him badly. He's now allowed at least six runs in three straight starts and hasn't pitched out of the sixth inning. That doesn't sound like a Cy Young winner to us. We still feel that Webb is better than most but if you don't feel comfortable starting a guy who has a three-game losing streak, go ahead and sit him until he proves this slump to be over. His next scheduled start comes Friday against the Reds
The Associated Press reports Arizona Diamondbacks SP Brandon Webb gave up a career-high six walks Saturday, Sept. 6. He has given up 11 walks in his last two starts - both against the Los Angeles Dodgers. That number is one more than he has given up in his previous seven starts combined. In the loss Saturday, he allowed five hits and seven runs in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six during the game.
What a three-start slump it's been for Webb, who has a 10.91 ERA and a 2.65 WHIP in 13 2/3 innings during the stretch. Included in that stretch is 12 walks in his last two outings, an uncomfortable total that could indicate he is pressing too hard to paint the corners of the strike zone. Still, with his reputation, he could easily reverse his slide on Sept. 12 at home against the Reds.
Brandon Webb was rocked for a third straight outing Saturday, allowing seven earned runs in 5 2/3 innings to the Dodgers. Webb has lost some ground in the Cy Young race and, more importantly, the Diamondbacks have fallen to second place behind the Dodgers in the NL West. He surrendered five hits and walked six while seeing his ERA rise to 3.41. The D-Backs have to be worried that there's something physically wrong with him. We'll see how he fares against the Reds next week.
Brandon Webb was pulled after just 5.2 innings against the Dodgers on Saturday and has now posted three terrible starts in a row. He gave up seven runs on five hits and seven walks. Manny Ramirez was the only Dodger to hit a home run off of him - a three-run shot in the fifth.Webb has combined to go just 13.2 innings in his last three starts. He has surrendered 21 runs in that span to go with 13 walks and 22 hits. It's difficult to explain the struggles and despite them, we still feel he is one of the best starters in the NL. With this recent string of catastrophic appearances, he may be in danger of losing a Cy Young award to CC Sabathia, who has only made 12 NL starts.
