Brandon Webb had a second straight rough outing Sunday, allowing eight runs -- six earned -- in 3 1/3 innings against the Dodgers. Despite facing weaker offenses, Webb has allowed 14 runs in eight innings over his last two starts. His previous outing against the Padres didn't raise any red flags, but he walked five and looked pretty pedestrian tonight. If his shoulder is bothering him again, the Diamondbacks are in trouble.
This was another tough outing for the sinkerballer, who gave up six earned runs on nine hits in his previous outing. What was disconcerting on Sunday was his abysmal command, indicating he may be struggling with his confidence. Still, the 19-game winner has been brilliant for most of the year, so give him a shot on Sept. 6 at Dodger Stadium.
News: Arizona SP Brandon Webb failed to earn his 20th victory on the season Sunday against the Dodgers and instead picked up his sixth loss. Webb did not pitch well as he allowed eight runs -- six earned -- on eight hits over just 3 1/3 innings. He walked five and had just three K's. His ERA is still a low 3.19.
Analysis: Still a favorite to win the NL Cy Young, Webb has now pitched two straight games in which he's allowed six runs and hasn't pitched out of the 5th inning. Webb was battling rib soreness before his last start but said that didn't affect him. For whatever the reason, Webb has now pitched poorly in two straight starts. Before that he was lights out and we believe he'll bounce right back in his next start. Webb meets Derek Lowe and Los Angeles again next Saturday, this time in L.A., and you know he'll be ready to make amends
