News: The Cardinals moved reliever Jason Isringhausen (elbow) and outfielder Chris Duncan (back) to the 60-day DL on Tuesday.
Analysis: Duncan had surgery on a herniated disk in his neck and his estimated rehabilitation time will be three to four months. He is out for the season, but he could prove healthy in spring 2009. Consider him an injury-risk sleeper in deeper leagues next spring
CBSSports.com reports the St. Louis Cardinals transferred OF Chris Duncan (back) to the 60-day disabled list Tuesday, Sept. 2.
Rick Ankiel is still bothered by his strained abdominal muscle, and only has four hits over his last 36 at-bats (.111), according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The injury has also limited him to three homers and nine RBI in the month of August. Manager Tony La Russa is concerned that the injury could be a more serious ailment like the sports hernia for which Chris Duncan eventually had to have surgery last year. After participating in early batting practice Wednesday, Ankiel went to a doctor to be checked before returning to the ballpark. The Cardinals have an off day today, and the Houston Astros will pitch lefthanders Friday and Sunday against the Cardinals, so Ankiel (struggling against lefthanders as of late) likely will sit. That will afford him extra time to rest. He feels his swing is fine, and just cannot run at 100 percent. Hopefully he can finish the season strong over the final month when fantasy owners need him the most.
The Associated Press' Chris Duncan reports Cincinnati Reds CL Francisco Cordero (personal) missed the game Tuesday night, Aug. 26, in order to visit his recently born son. Cordero was expected back Wednesday, Aug. 27, according to Reds manager Dusty Baker.
The Associated Press' Chris Duncan reports Houston Astros SP Wandy Rodriguez fanned a career-high 10 batters Tuesday night, Aug. 26. He went seven innings and allowed just one earned run on three hits and a walk, but did not receive a decision for his effort. Wandy was fantastic, said Astros manager Cecil Cooper. His command was good, his breaking ball was good. He was attacking the bottom of the strike zone.
Status: D.L.. Return status unknown
Chris Duncan will undergo surgery on his herniated cervical disk on Monday, ending his season. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that "according to a specialist familiar with disk cases, such a condition 'has to be' considered career threatening." He'll have a prosthetic disk put in his back, and the recovery time is 3-6 weeks, but the team is more concerned about his long-term future and won't have him play again this season. He's reportedly been dealing with the back pain all season, which helps explain his struggles.
