News: Cubs 1B Daryle Ward, getting a start in the outfield, went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Saturday at Milwaukee. The home run was his fourth of the season.
Analysis: Ward has some pop, but as primarily a pinch hitter, he never gets a chance to show it. You wouldn't want to draft him in 2009
Ward, who struck his first long ball since Aug. 15, made the most of only his third start in September. The journeyman utility player, a career .263 hitter, has slipped to .216 this year, his worst season since 2003.

The Associated Press reports Chicago Cubs 1B Derrek Lee (back) did not start Sunday, Aug. 24, due to upper back spasms after aggravating a lingering injury. Lee said he suffers occasional spasms in his neck and the left side of his upper back. IF Daryle Ward started at first base for Lee for only the third time this season.
Derrek Lee is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Marlins, the Palm Beach Post reports. Daryle Ward will start at first base. Lee has played in 120 of the team's 122 games.Lee is hitting only .227 since the All-Star break, and Ward punched out a game-changing three-run homer on Friday. We figure this move is just a way to get Lee a breather.
