Major League Baseball owners approved Hal Steinbrenner as control person of the Yankees. Control person? That's such an odd term, but the Yankees apparently needed to come up with something with George still technically listed as the chairman. Hal Steinbrenner, the co-chairman of the team along with his older brother, Hank, will now be the official liaison between the Commissioner's Office and the team.

Derek Jeter won his third straight Silver Slugger on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.Jeter's offensive game has fallen off a bit as he's getting on in age. 2008 was the first time in his career that he failed to score 100 runs in a season in which he played at least 148 games.

Jeter finished strong to close out Yankee Stadium, hitting .402 (35-for-87) in his last 22 games at the old ballpark. Still, it's hard to ignore the decline he took from a power standpoint, posting a slugging percentage of .408, well below his career mark of .458. Don't be surprised if he can't reach double-digit homers next year. That said, his ability to make contact and cross home plate keeps him in the Top 10 shortstop rankings.
