The Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting the Texas Rangers may have placed CL Eddie Guardado on waivers, but no confirmation was given by the team.

Texas Rangers RP Eddie Guardado earned his fourth save of the season Saturday, Aug. 16, against the Tampa Bay Rays, according to The Associated Press.

Guardado, who's taken over closing duties with C.J. Wilson out for the rest of the year, had allowed a run in each of his last two appearances, so this outing was refreshing for owners. While Nice Guy Eddie doesn't overpower hitters anymore, he's still owns a solid 3.21 ERA and 1.01 WHIP, good enough for a spot on most squads.

News: Texas Rangers closer C.J. Wilson has decided to have surgery on his left elbow and will miss the rest of the season. Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Wilson opted for surgery after meeting Monday in California with Dr. Lewis Yocum. The operation to clean up bone spurs and bone chips will be done later this week. "We'd like to have C.J. help us down the stretch, but he knows his elbow better than anyone else, and he didn't feel he could help the club," Daniels wrote in an e-mail response. Daniels said doctors feel Wilson should be fully recovered "well in advance of spring training." Eddie Guardado became the closer when Wilson went on the 15-day DL.

Analysis: Guardado isn't a top option at the closer position, but the fact he has job security certainly helps his Fantasy value. Consider him a sleeper in deeper leagues down the stretch

Guardado will be in line for the bulk of the Rangers' save opportunities for the near future. C.J. Wilson continues to struggle mightily with his command, as he served up a grand slam to the free-swinging Richie Sexson during his apperance on Tuesday. Guardado is worth a roster spot on any save-hungry team.

Guardado went into Tuesday's game with the Yankees with a 2.11 ERA in his past 24 outings. He had not allowed a run in 22 of 24 games. He is certainly worth a spot on any save-needy team's roster while closing.

Hawkins has detected a mechanical flaw on Wilson's breaking pitches that might be contributing to a recent lack of control. Wilson indicated he might have a tired arm.

Analysis: Guardado pitched a scoreless ninth inning Monday and eventually earned the win against the Yankees when Marlon Byrd hit a walk-off homer. Guardado has tossed seven straight scoreless outings and might get some save chances down the stretch, but since he will mostly pitch in a setup role, he remains more of a Fantasy middle reliever

News: According to The Sports Xchange notes: Rangers manager Ron Washington said he was just keeping the promise he made in spring training, but, at least to the casual observer, the club sure looked like one that might be transitioning to a new closer Sunday night. With the Rangers holding a one-run lead in the bottom of the eighth, it was Eddie Guardado, not closer C.J. Wilson, who warmed up. The Rangers scored three more runs in the inning, thus neutralizing the save opportunity, but Guardado pitched ninth anyway. "I told you guys at the beginning of the year that there will be times when I go to Eddie, and I wanted to go to Eddie (Sunday)," Washington said after the 8-4 win Sunday. "That's not C.J. falling out of favor or losing his job, it's nothing like that."

Analysis: Washington did indeed say that at the start of the year, but the only time Wilson hasn't gotten the save opportunity this season is when he was unavailable (which happened once in May when he had thrown 75 pitches in a span of four days) or when the Rangers needed a reliever to get ready in a hurry (as happened when Warner Madrigal loaded the bases with a five-run lead on July 11). Guardado got the save in the July 11 game; he was called on in the middle of the inning because it takes him less time to get ready than Wilson. Wilson, who has compiled a 6.17 ERA since June 1 and has a 5.28 ERA for the season, had not pitched Saturday and threw only 13 pitches while allowing Seattle to score twice to break a ninth-inning tie July 30. "I just felt it. I felt Eddie was the right man," Washington said of his decision to go with Guardado. "That's all it was."
