David Lennon, of New York Newsday, reports New York Mets OF Fernando Tatis will be the team's starting left fielder for the foreseeable future, according to manager Jerry Manuel. Tatis will not share a platoon position with OF Endy Chavez when OF Ryan Church (concussion) returns.
Chavez swiped his fifth bag of the season and first since June 17. The multi-hit performance was his second in the last four games, during which he is 7-for-14 with two walks and four runs. Due to his sporadic playing time and .270 average, the platoon outfielder is only a viable option in NL-only formats.
Nice to see Chavez get off the schneid, as he'd gone hitless in 11 straight at-bats prior to Tuesday's affair. Though he owns a respectable .305 average in 59 at-bats this month, the veteran outfielder has managed just two extra-base hits and four RBIs in that stretch, numbers that relegate him to NL-only consideration at this point.
While Fernando Tatis has been assisting in the latest run by the Mets, the team doesn't appear to threatening with Endy Chavez hitting second and Damion Easley hitting fifth. Tatis is starting in left field and hitting seventh on Monday as the Mets play the finale of a four-game series against the Phillies. With Ryan Church's health in question and Luis Castillo on the disabled list, the Mets offense looks average at best.
