Second base might be Velez's job to lose in 2009 if he could establish himself defensively. But he hasn't been able to do so thus far, which leaves wiggle room for Kevin Frandsen. At the very least, Velez's outstanding speed makes him a good source of steals in NL-only play.
Eugenio Velez will be in the mix to start at second base next season for the Giants though GM Brian Sabean is "pulling for" Kevin Frandsen who is coming back from injury, according to The Mercury News.Velez hit .262 with 15 steals in 275 AB this season and was particularly hot down the stretch hitting .328 over his last 45 appearances. As for Frandsen, he was in the mix to start at third base this season before injuring his Achilles tendon. Velez has the speed, so it would be best, from a fantasy perspective, if he were to win the job.
Velez has found his rhythm this month, ringing up a sterling .348 average, eight extra-base hits and a pair of stolen bases while playing all around the diamond.
San Francisco Giants OF Eugenio Velez is hitting .346 over his past 24 games, according to The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.
News: Giants 2B Eugenio Velez, getting a start in left field Thursday at Arizona, went 1-for-4 with a strikeout. Recently made an everyday player with the loss of Emmanuel Burriss, though, he's batting .389 (14-for-36) over his last 10 games.
Analysis: Velez has only one stolen base during that same stretch, though, and if you own him in Fantasy, you own him for his speed. Still, he deserves a flier in NL-only and deeper Rotisserie leagues since he's hitting well. Unless he enters 2009 with a starting job, expect him to go widely undrafted
