Cordero was certainly dependable in his first season as Cincinnati's closer, but occasional bouts of wildness (4.86 BB/9) could spell trouble next time around.

Cordero was certainly dependable in his first season as Cincinnati's closer, but occasional bouts of wildness (4.86 BB/9) could spell trouble next time around.
Reds.MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker said he plans to be on the phone this offseason trying to convince free agents to come aboard. Baker played a big part in landing CL Francisco Cordero by contacting him on the phone at his home in the Dominican Republic. "That's part of my job; I'll try to talk with guys," Baker said. "I'll be on the phone quite a bit."
The Reds revealed Friday that Cordero had been playing with a bone spur in his right foot all season. The right-hander underwent arthroscopic surgery and a minor microfracture procedure to have it removed. Team medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek performed the 90-minute procedure in Cincinnati. Cordero, who saved 34 games this year, is expected to be fully recovered in time for Spring Training next year.
Francisco Cordero underwent surgery Friday to remove a bone spur in his right foot and a minor microfracture procedure. He's obviously done for the season, which could lead to Jared Burton potentially getting a save chance this weekend. David Weathers would be the alternative. Cordero converted 34 of 40 save chances in his first season of a four-year, $46 million contract. It was clear at the time and it's obvious now that there were better ways for the Reds to spend that money.
News: Reds closer Francisco Cordero returned to Cincinnati on Friday and was expected to have arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone spur from his right foot. Cordero, 5-4 with 34 saves and a 3.33 ERA, was to be operated on by Reds medical director Dr. Timonthy Kremchek.
Analysis: Cordero looked like a free-agent bust at times this season, but he is a closer to trust in most formats on a regular basis. The Reds should be much improved in 2009, so he should remain one of the top 15 targets at the position on Draft Day
