ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports the Houston Astros have kicked around the names of SPs Mike Hampton (Braves), Freddy Garcia (Tigers), Paul Byrd (Red Sox) and Pedro Martinez (Mets) as possible free agent topics.
How his arm feels from that outing will likely determine when the free-agent right-hander starts pitching in the main league, which is what Major League teams are waiting to see. A few clubs have expressed preliminary interest, but a healthy winter campaign will be important for him to prove that his arm strength is back. If Garcia does that, he becomes an alternative for teams looking for starting pitching without a high-priced commitment. The veteran starter hadn't pitched in a game since his six-plus innings of one-run ball in the Tigers' season finale Sept. 29.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Texas Rangers could target free-agent SP Freddy Garcia (Tigers) in the offseason.
Jason Beck, of MLB.com, reports the Detroit Tigers will keep a close on free-agent SP Freddy Garcia (Tigers) as he plays in the Venezuelan Winter League.
Despite the silence from Detroit, Garcia has already attracted some early inquiries from a few teams before the veteran right-hander makes an appearance in winter ball. He had been hoping to start pitching in his native Venezuela last month and build his surgically repaired shoulder back to full strength before Spring Training, but he has progressed slowly after feeling a muscle tweak between his neck and shoulder in that final outing. The veteran right-hander wants to use those games to show his arm strength to scouts after labrum surgery in August 2007.
