Even if Gonzalez and Outman open the year in Triple-A Sacramanto, it's probably just a matter of time before they're up for good. Braden brings less upside, but proved to be a viable big league starter when Joe Blanton was shipped to Philadelphia last July. Top prospects Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson are dark-horse rotation candidates.
Athletics.MLB.com's Mychael Urban reports Oakland Athletics SPs Gio Gonzalez and Josh Outman are likely to compete for a rotation spot next year.
News: According to The Sports Xchange, Athletics rookie LHP Gio Gonzalez, demoted to the bullpen earlier this month, doesn't look bad there at all -- he has worked six scoreless relief innings, and on Friday he struck out four in three innings, including Ichiro Suzuki, Yuniesky Betancourt and Raul Ibanez in the eighth inning. Many scouts have mentioned that they think Gonzalez could be a successful left-handed reliever, but A's manager Bob Geren said that there are no plans to keep Gonzalez in the bullpen next year. The 23-year-old, who came over in the Nick Swisher deal with the White Sox, is in Oakland's rotation plans.
Analysis: Geren explained that the bullpen is simply a controlled environment in which Gonzalez can work out a few things. He was taken out of the rotation after giving up eight earned runs in 1 2/3 innings at Detroit. Gonzalez said that he has been doing a lot of work with pitching coach Curt Young and bullpen coach Ron Romanick to ensure that his head remains on target. Among other things, he has changed his landing spot. "Everything is in a straight line," Gonzalez said. "Before it was a little bit diagonal. Ronnie Ro is working with me on stuff so instead of being out of control, I'll be in control. Right now, it's one step at a time." Gonzalez has great strikeout potential and upside and will enter 2009 as a sleeper in all Fantasy leagues as long as he secures a rotation spot
Athletics.MLB.com's Shawn Shroyer reports Oakland Athletics manager Bob Geren said even though SP Gio Gonzalez has been relieving, Geren sees him as a starter.
Gio Gonzalez is the likely starter for Saturday in place of the injured Justin Duchscherer, according to the SF Chronicle. Kirk Saarloos is also a possibility.Gonzalez is a top prospect, but is not ready to make an impact as he holds a 8.70 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over 30 innings. He should only be considered for deeper AL-only leagues if named Saturday's starter.
None.
Numbers in parenthesis for each team indicates total runs scored that game. Numbers next to each pitcher indicates earned runs.
The run differential is based on total runs each team scored when Gio Gonzalez has a decision. (i.e. win/loss) Similarly, the opposing pitcher listed also received a decision.
