Control issues have dogged Gonzalez during his first stint in Oakland. He's walked 19 batters in 22 1/3 innings, contributing to an ugly 7.25 ERA. Clearly the left-handed prospect has a ways to go before owners can call on him with any level of consistency.
News: A's SP Gio Gonzalez couldn't survive Wednesday against the Angels with a six-run lead and left after three-plus innings. Staked to a 6-0 lead through two innings in his in his fifth big league start, Gonzalez failed to retire a batter in the fourth as the Angels made a game of it with a four-run rally. Gonzalez, who escaped a one-out bases-loaded jam in the second after walking three batters, hit Robb Quinlan with a pitch to load them again in the fourth with none out. No. 9 hitter Erick Aybar chased Gonzalez with a two-run single, Quinlan scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Gary Matthews Jr., and Mark Teixeira's RBI single against Alan Embree made it 6-4. Gonzalez allowed three hits, four runs and five walks while striking out four.
Analysis: Gonzalez has taken two straight no decisions and has allowed four or more runs in three of his first five starts. Such inconsistency can be expected from a rookie pitcher. He has serious upside and strikeout potential, though, so make sure you own him in AL-only and long-term keeper leagues. His next scheduled start is for Tuesday against the Royals. He is on track to be a two-start pitcher Fantasy Week 23 (Sept. 1-7) with his second start coming against the Orioles
