Oakland Athletics SP Greg Smith threw seven shutout innings Saturday, Sept. 6, against the Baltimore Orioles, according to The Associated Press. He allowed three hits, five walks and two strikeouts, while improving to 7-14 on the season.
News: Greg Smith pitched seven shutout innings and the Oakland Athletics handed the Baltimore Orioles their eighth straight loss, 5-1 Saturday night. Smith (7-14) allowed three hits, walked five and struck out two.
Analysis: The left-hander was 1-8 since June 30 and had yielded a total of 13 runs in his last two starts. That's not good. Pitching against the hapless Orioles, he won, but he shouldn't be trusted to do that too often. He's just an AL-only starter. His next scheduled start comes Thursday against Texas
Greg Smith blanked the Orioles for seven innings to earn a victory Saturday. The A's and Orioles were able to get one game in after Hanna wiped out the first half of a scheduled doubleheader. Facing the only AL team that's playing worse than his own club is, Smith was able to limit Baltimore to just three hits and record his second victory in 12 starts. He still doesn't look like a very good play in AL-only leagues right now.
A friendly change of pace for Smith, who yielded 13 earned runs in his prior two starts. He has a poor 50-to-86 ground ball-to-fly ball ratio in his last nine starts, so he'll need to get that in order if he wants to toss another quality outing. He'll likely pitch against the Rangers at home on Sept. 12.
Greg Smith threw seven shutout innings against the Orioles on Saturday night improving his record to 7-14. He only gave up three hits but he walked five.It was just the second win for the 24 year old since June. Smith has made 28 starts this season and should be able to use that experience to help him land a spot in the 2009 A's rotation.
