A's reliever Huston Street would like to regain his former role as closer, but Oakland manager Bob Geren said that will not happen, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.Street has been much better lately, but the A's are happy with Brad Ziegler in the role, so do not expect Street to pick up any saves for your fantasy team down the stretch.
Asked Sunday whether Huston Street was ready to reclaim closer duties, manager Bob Geren said: "As of right now, no." Street has retired 18 of the past 19 batters he's faced while regaining some of his lost velocity, and said Sunday that he's hoping to get back into the mix for saves. "I'm looking to hopefully get some chances," Street said. "I haven't expressed that directly to them, but that was the whole reason I was taken out of the role, to return to form. And the last nine innings have indicated I've returned to form." The San Francisco Chronicle speculates that the emergence of Brad Ziegler and Joey Devine could lead to Street being traded during the offseason.Source: San Francisco Chronicle Related: Brad Ziegler, Joey Devine
Oakland Athletics CL Huston Street hurled two perfect innings Saturday, Aug. 30, against the Minnesota Twins, with three strikeouts, according to The Associated Press. He improved to 5-5 on the season.
Huston Street pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings and won for the fifth time this season after the A's came back to beat the Twins 3-2 on Saturday. Called on to close out a 2-1 lead in the ninth, Twins closer Joe Nathan gave up a single and hit a batter to begin the inning. Ryan Sweeney then attempted a sac bunt. Nathan pounded on the ball and decided to target the lead runner, only to throw the ball into left field. With so much foul territory in Oakland, the winning run came all the way around to score. The Twins, who had a chance to move back into first place, remained a half-game behind the White Sox with the loss. Street is 3-0 while giving up just one run in 9 1/3 innings over his last eight appearances.
News: A's RP Huston Street (4-5) retired all five batters he faced after coming on in the sixth inning Wednesday against the Angels and earned the win in a 6-5 victory. He struck out three for his second relief win since Aug. 15.
Analysis: Street has really settled down on the hill since being removed from the closer's role. He has allowed just one run in seven outings spanning 7 1/3 innings. He might eventually return to the closer's role, but the Athletics' bullpen situation remains uncertain, making Street a risky start outside of AL-only leagues
