News: The Oakland Athletics completed their trade for star outfielder Matt Holliday from the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, landing a big bat for the middle of their lineup. The Rockies received right-handed reliever Huston Street, lefty starter Greg Smith and promising outfielder Carlos Gonzalez from the A's. The clubs reached a tentative agreement Monday, but had to wait for the results of physicals and other details to be worked out. "The long-term model for our organization to be successful has always been built around the team dynamic," Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd said. "The three men we acquired from Oakland are talented major league players that are a solid fit for us."
Analysis: Street, a 25-year-old right-hander, was demoted from his job as Oakland's closer this season and finished 7-5 with a 3.73 ERA and 18 saves in 25 chances. He would join a bullpen that includes Manny Corpas but is expected to lose closer Brian Fuentes in free agency. Street can become a free agent after the 2010 season. You have to figure Street will open spring training as the Rockies' closer, which makes him a candidate for 30 saves and one of the top 15 closers to target on Draft Day. He has top 10, perhaps even top five potential, and we think he outperforms his draft position

Huston Street was sent from Oakland to Colorado in the Matt Holliday deal. For a 25-year-old with 94 career saves, a 2.88 ERA and 271 strikeouts in 269 innings, Street sure does seem to be taken lightly. Even in his worst year, he had a .229 average against and fanned 69 in 70 innings. He has been shaky in the ninth inning and he is starting to get expensive, but there's little reason to think he's going to stop being an effective reliever anytime soon. We're guessing he'll do pretty well as a closer for whatever team he ends up with.Related: Athletics

News: Matt Holliday's trade to the Athletics was nearly completed Tuesday and an announcement was expected soon. The Rockies were set to send Holliday to the A's for reliever Huston Street, left-hander Greg Smith and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez. The teams were reviewing the players' physicals and an announcement was anticipated early Wednesday, two people with knowledge of the discussions said. Smith and Gonzalez, considered a top prospect, came to the A's last offseason in the blockbuster trade that sent ace Dan Haren to Arizona.

The Cardinals, Mets, Tigers, Indians and Rays are among the clubs in the market for a closer this winter, though the Tigers do not appear to be involved with Street, the Web site reported. Street fell out of favor this past season in Oakland and was replaced in the closer's role by Brad Ziegler.

While the Rockies haven't officially acquired Huston Street from the A's yet, the San Francisco Chronicle reports that they may look to "spin him" to the Mets, Tigers, Indians or Brewers. Francisco Rodriguez, Brian Fuentes, Kerry Wood and Trevor Hoffman create what is a very strong market for free agent closers, so cash conscious teams may view trading for Street as an alternative.Source: San Francisco Chronicle Related: Indians, Rockies, Tigers, Brewers, Mets
