Saltalamacchia suffered the injury on Sept. 1 while making a throw to first base, and was told by team doctors he would be out six to eight weeks. When he is reevaluated, Saltalamacchia will find out when he can begin a throwing program.

The club has stated the incumbent backstop Gerald Laird and youngster Taylor Teagarden will split time behind the dish for the final 23 games of the season, a decision that has clearly taken Laird by surprise. "I think they owe it to all of us to settle the situation," said Laird. "I want to have the opportunity to play without worrying about a young guy coming up and taking my job."
