Mariners SP Jarrod Washburn pitched six effective innings Sunday against the Yankees and was in line for the win before the bullpen could not hold a 5-2 lead. Washburn took the no decision as New York rallied for a 6-5 win. Washburn allowed just four hits and two runs while walking three and striking out two. The only runs he allowed were on a Derek Jeter double and Johnny Damon groundout.

According to MLB.com, Mariners SP Jarrod Washburn will make his next start Sunday at the Yankees instead of Monday against Boston because the Mariners want to hold Felix Hernandez (calf) out until Monday. In his last two starts, Washburn has been tagged for 20 hits and 16 runs in 7 1/3 innings -- a 19.64 ERA.

The Sports XChange reports that LHP Jarrod Washburn, who collected his first big league save by pitching a scoreless 12th inning Wednesday in Arlington, Texas, against the Rangers, will be in the bullpen for this weekend's series against San Diego. With days off Thursday and again Monday, manager John McLaren has opted to skip him in the rotation. "If we didn't skip somebody, there was going to be two or three pitchers going on seven days' rest, and we couldn't have that," McLaren said.

But he gave up three consecutive hits then left with tightness in his right calf. He ended up beating Texas for the first time in three years, a run of 10 starts, allowing three earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts in six innings.
