News: Catcher Jason LaRue and the Cardinals agreed Friday to a $950,000, one-year contract. The 34-year-old was eligible to become a free agent after serving as primary backup for Yadier Molina last season, his first with the Cardinals. "Jason was a great fit for our ballclub," general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement. "His contributions carried not only onto the field, but also in the clubhouse and away from the ballpark, where he provided a good veteran leadership." In addition to his base salary, LaRue would make a $50,000 bonus if he has 60 starts.

St. Louis Cardinals C Mark L. Johnson (head) left the game against the Cincinnati Reds Saturday, Sept. 27, after the fifth inning, according to The Associated Press. He was hit in the mask on 1B Joey Votto's backswing on a ground ball to end the fifth. When trainers asked him about the last pitch he called and he couldn't remember, La Russa removed him from the game in favor of C Jason LaRue.

It's been another relatively quiet season for LaRue, who's batting .236 with four jacks and 19 RBIs in 53 contests.

Yadier Molina had to leave the Cardinals game with the Cubs in the fifth inning due to a bruised thigh, according to the Associated Press. He was replaced in the lineup by Jason LaRue.Currently in the top-10 in the NL batting race at .308, if Molina were lost for any length of time the already small playoff hopes of the club would likely be dashed. Molina had suffered the injury in the second inning when he was run over by, of all people, Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly who did his best impression of Matt Forte.
