The Boston Globe reports that Jason Varitek is out for Monday's game against Texas because of the flu. Kevin Cash will start behind the plate.

Red Sox C Jason Varitek didn't start as Kevin Cash caught knuckleballing starter Tim Wakefield on Tuesday at Cleveland. But after warming up in the bullpen, the 36-year-old Varitek came up with one out in the ninth and drove a 1-2 sinker from Jensen Lewis (0-1) the opposite way to left-center for his third homer this season and his third career drive as a pinch-hitter. It gave the Red Sox the lead. "I've had my fair share of appearances as a pinch-hitter over my career," Varitek said while icing his knees. "I haven't been able to do that very often."

Jason Varitek has not fared well against Chien-Ming Wang, tonight's opposing hurler for New York, according to MLB.com. Varitek only registered one hit over 19 career at-bats against Wang, who is currently 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA.Varitek is worth sitting tonight if you have a more favorable option at the position.
