Matt Treanor and Mike Rabelo were platooning behind the plate at the beginning of the season, but injuries to Rabelo and lack of production offensively at the position made catcher a target at the Trade Deadline. But Baker stepped up since joining the team on July 9 and, shortly thereafter, cemented the starting job for the rest of the year. Baker, a left-handed hitter with a good approach at the plate, figures to be a favorite to start for the team in 2009, but he needs to improve his defense.

News: The Sports Xchange notes that John Baker returned to the starting lineup Friday at New York for the first time since Tuesday and went 2-for-3. He missed Wednesday's game with a sore left knee.
Analysis: Consider Baker a sleeper in deeper NL-only leagues and a potential starter entering spring 2009. He isn't a great prospect, but he's proving he knows how to hit in the majors

Joe Frisaro, of MLB.com, reports Florida Marlins C John Baker (knee) is expected to be in the lineup Thursday, Sept. 25. He is listed as day-to-day with a sore left knee.
