The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Paul Hoynes reports the Cleveland Indians have interest in Houston Astros CL Jose Valverde if he becomes available for trade.

The Indians would be interested in Jose Valverde if the Astros offer him on the trading block as expected, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Indians' GM Mark Shapiro said, "If Valverde is available, he's be a guy we'd explore."The Indians top needs for 2009 are a closer and third baseman. Valverde would be a strong addition to fill one of those voids, as he nailed down 44 saves with a 1.18 WHIP for Houston in 2008.

Of those three, however, Valverde is the least likely to be dealt. The Astros have no one to step in at closer if Valverde leaves, and this winter, with so many closers (K-Rod, Trevor Hoffman, Kerry Wood, et al) on the market if they are going to trade him it makes more sense for the Astros to wait until July when the market for Valverde would be considerably stronger.

The Houston Chronicle's Richard Justice believes that "the Astros seem likely to trade both" Jose Valverde and Ty Wigginton "in the next few weeks." We rarely take Justice seriously, but the whispers about the Astros needing to cut payroll are getting louder. Trading Wigginton makes some sense, considering that the team is down on him as a third baseman and has no room for him in the outfield, but if they trade Valverde, then it would be a clear indication that they really are having money problems.
