MLB.com reports the San Francisco Giants might not look to re-sign free-agent 1B Rich Aurilia (Giants) if they end up signing free-agent 2B Juan Uribe (White Sox).
Uribe, 29, hit only .247 with seven home runs and 40 RBI in 110 games last season for the Chicago White Sox, but he hit 20 or more homers in three of the previous four seasons. He can play second base, shortstop and third, demonstrating the kind of versatility the Giants tend to seek. Uribe's 2008 salary was "only" $4.5 million, so money probably wouldn't be an issue.
Uribe began the year as the team's starting second baseman, before being supplanted by AL Rookie of the Year candidate Alexei Ramirez. Although Uribe has been an extremely popular and entertaining figure in the White Sox clubhouse and provides excellence through his defensive versatility, he is not in the White Sox starting plans. Uribe is expected to look for a full-time job on the open market.
