News: The Athletics sent infielder Donnie Murphy and RHP Kirk Saarloos outright to Triple-A Sacramento and activated RHP Justin Duchscherer from the 15-day DL.
Analysis: Duchscherer has dealt with chronic hip issues, but he hopes to be ready for spring training. Consider him a sleeper in deeper leagues, but remember the A's aren't likely to be a top contender and Duchscherer is an injury risk
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the arthroscopic hip surgery performed on Justin Duchscherer earlier this week was done to "clean out loose cartilage." Duchscherer said Thursday that he'll be sidelined for two months and "will be ready to go during spring training." Next season is a contract year for Duchscherer, so his health will be key.Source: San Francisco Chronicle
Susan Slusser, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports Oakland Athletics SP Justin Duchscherer (hip) is currently on crutches after his surgery, but said he will be walking in less than a week. Duchscherer believes he initially injured his hip Aug. 13 on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays.
It appears Duchscherer will return in time for Spring Training, after wrapping up a breakthrough season in which he became Oakland's ace, going 10-8 with a 2.54 ERA in 22 starts. "Everything went well," wrote Duchscherer. "I just had some torn cartilage cleaned out. I'll be fine in two months." Duchscherer, who turns 31 next month, is arbitration-eligible this winter and was hoping to earn a multiyear deal from the A's by staying healthy all season. "That's what makes this so frustrating," he said on Sept. 20. "I wanted to prove they could count on me." It was Duchscherer's first season in the rotation, and it may take until the halfway point in 2009 before his arm adjusts to the wear and tear.
Athletics.MLB.com's Mychael Urban reports Oakland Athletics SP Justin Duchscherer (hip) said in a text message that his exploratory surgery was a success. "Everything went well," wrote Duchscherer. "I just had some torn cartilage cleaned out. I'll be fine in two months."
