News: Kevin Millwood, who turns 34 next month, already has been working out, shedding 13 pounds to 232 with plans to get down to at least 225.
Analysis: Millwood has been a low-end Fantasy starting pitcher in Texas. He will get great run support and be a sleeper in deeper leagues if he can finally stay healthy for a full season. Don't count on it and consider him more of an AL-only Fantasy option on Draft Day. We would not be surprised to see him have a bounce-back year and surprise people in mixed leagues, though
The Dallas Morning News reports that the Rangers have lured Mike Maddux away from the Brewers to become their pitching coach. Maddux became a free agent after the World Series, and while the Brewers wanted him back, it sounds like the Rangers, who probably have the game's highest-paid hitting coach in Rudy Jaramillo, stepped in with a big offer. The 33-year-old Millwood salvaged an otherwise disappointing season with a fantastic five-start stretch in August (2.76 ERA, 20/2 K/BB ratio). The fact that he demonstrated decent control after the All-Star break (53/12 K/BB) suggests there's more left in the tank.
News: Rangers SP Kevin Millwood allowed nine hits and five runs -- four earned -- in six innings Sunday at the Angels, walking one and striking out six. The right-hander lost his last three decisions.
Analysis: Millwood has an ERA over 5.00 and is strictly an innings eater at this point in his career. Consider him an option better left for AL-only leagues in 2009, especially if he continues to pitch in that hitter's park
Kevin Millwood yielded five runs -- four earned -- in six innings against the Angels on Sunday to fall to 9-10 on the year. Millwood struck out six, but remained as hittable as ever while yielding five singles, three doubles, and a homer. He finishes the year with a 5.07 ERA and an awful 220 hits allowed in just 168 2/3 innings of work. He's due $11 million in 2009 and there's a team option that guarantees if he gets to 180 innings pitched next year, so don't expect the Rangers to keep him in their rotation all year.
