With the number of right-handed arms the Rockies have for the late innings, dealing Street elsewhere makes sense -- especially if starting pitching help comes in return. But the team went to the '07 World Series with essentially two closers (Corpas and Brian Fuentes). With Corpas at $750,000 this year and Street expected to earn around $4 million through arbitration, it's not as if the Rockies are overspending. As things stand, both pitchers will compete for the role of closer in Spring Training.
Rockies.MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports Colorado Rockies RP Manny Corpas has begun a physical conditioning program. His next step will be to go to the Dominican Republic to work out at the team's facility in December before he pitches in the World Baseball Classic.
News: With the trade for closer Huston Street, Manny Corpas is likely to be slotted as the setup man, while free-agent closer Brian Fuentes will be allowed to leave this winter.
Analysis: Corpas is a solid middle reliever at this point, but he shouldn't be counted on for save chances as long as Street is healthy. Fuentes will have to sign elsewhere as a closer and there is a still a slight chance he might sign with a big-budget team to be a setup man, too
According to the Denver Post, "the Rockies have told people close to Manny Corpas" that he will be the team's closer even after the trade for Huston Street. Just about everything indicates that the Rockies aren't planning to keep Street for the long term and Corpas was in line to replace free agent Brian Fuentes in the ninth inning. Corpas posted a 3.45 ERA and 41/10 K/BB ratio over his final 60 innings last season after losing the closer job to Fuentes.Source: Denver Post Related: Huston Street, Brian Fuentes
Troy E. Renck, of The Denver Post, reports Colorado Rockies RP Manny Corpas is expected to return to the team in 2009.
None.
Numbers in parenthesis for each team indicates total runs scored that game. Numbers next to each pitcher indicates earned runs.
The run differential is based on total runs each team scored when Manny Corpas has a decision. (i.e. win/loss) Similarly, the opposing pitcher listed also received a decision.
