News: The St. Louis Cardinals conceded the Matt Clement signing was a failed gamble on Saturday, releasing a right-hander who has struggled to return from shoulder surgery in 2006.
Analysis: Clement, 33, was pitching for the team's Triple-A affiliate in Memphis, going 1-0 with a 4.61 ERA in 12 games. He did not make a start, totaling 13 2-3 innings, and had allowed three home runs. The move leaves the Cardinals with an open spot on their 40-man roster. Clement has absolutely no Fantasy value for the rest of 2008
Cardinals released RHP Matt Clement from Triple-A Memphis. Clement had allowed seven earned runs and walked 10 in 13 2/3 innings since being moved to the pen at Triple-A Memphis. Maybe he's not completely hopeless yet, but it had become clear that he wasn't going to contribute this year.
Cardinals SP Matt Clement (shoulder) made his first rehab start Wednesday for Class A Palm Beach. Pitching for the first time in nearly two years, Clement allowed one hit in six innings as the Cardinals beat the Daytona Cubs 2-1 Tuesday. The 33-year-old right-hander struck out five without issuing a walk. He threw 73 pitches and touched 88 mph on the radar gun. "For me to say this would happen tonight, I would be lying. I was hoping to feel good and feel like myself. To have this happen, it's a tremendous blessing," Clement told MiLB.com. "I'm kind of at a loss of words, but at the same time, it's the first step toward the ultimate goal."
