Padres C Michael Barrett will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Portland on Monday and later in the week will join Class A Lake Elsinore. Barrett has been on the DL since April 8 with a sprained ligament in his right elbow.

The Padres got some good news when catcher Michael Barrett threw from behind the plate Friday for the first time since going on the disabled list April 8 after spraining a ligament in his right elbow. He had been catching in the bullpen, taking batting practice and keeping up with his conditioning, but was kept from making throws from behind the plate to the bases until Friday.

"Michael is going to throw to the bases on Friday in Seattle to further test the elbow," Padres manager Bud Black said, "but he's making great strides. With the bat, he's swinging great, so there's no issue swinging the bat at all. Now, it's just an issue of regaining the arm strength and the confidence to make throws."

"I just think it's a confidence thing for me. Four weeks ago, how I was feeling, being tentative, I think that's normal. ... You have to work through that." Padres manager Bud Black caught Barrett Saturday. "It's getting the reps back," Black said. "It was good for him. He's got to pass the test of a progressive throwing program. I think it's still way too early in the rehabilitation of the elbow to plan anything long term. I think we'll get a better indication in a week."
