After boasting a .325 average in his rookie season, Aviles didn't want to take a chance on his skills rusting. "It's a chance to keep my swing on the same path, and I feel like I don't really lose much. I figured if I sat around for four months straight, I might have to revamp my whole swing and try to get back to where I was," he said. "I'm trying to keep my swing and my defense all in the same [mode]. I try not to have too much time off." Turning 28 in March, Aviles is entering his peak years.

Mike Aviles has been named the Royals' Player of the Year for 2008, according to MLB.com.The rookie shortstop earned the honor by hitting .327 over 101 games, with 27 doubles, four triples, 10 homers, 51 RBI, eight stolen bases, and 68 runs scored. He should make an even bigger impact in 2009.

Mike Aviles went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for Santurce as the Puerto Rican Winter League opened play on Thursday. After a one-year shutdown, the league resumed on a high note on Thursday, with John Pachot hitting a walkoff homer in the 10th inning to give Santurce a 5-4 victory over Carolina. It was the only game scheduled.
