Mike Sweeney hopes to join another club after he clears waivers from Oakland today, according to the SF Chronicle. Sweeney said, "Hopefully, I'll pack up again and go to a contender, or I'll go watch the sunset on the beach with my wife and kids."He was given an option of being released or being placed on the 60-day DL. He had trouble staying healthy this season, but provides a solid bat when he plays as he hit .286 over 126 at-bats.

News: Mike Sweeney knows his major league career might be over. The Athletics released the 35-year-old first baseman-designated hitter after he struggled to return from operations on each knee. Sweeney, a 14-year veteran who spent all but this season with the Kansas City Royals, was limited to 42 games this year because of knee injuries. Doctors have told the five-time All-Star he needs surgery on both knees and the recovery time is six to nine months. Sweeney had procedures in early June to repair loose cartilage in the knees. He had hoped to recover by the All-Star break.

Sweeney, who missed 85 games from May 29-Sept. 2 while recovering from double knee surgery, went 1-for-6 in a pair of games after returning from the DL this past week. Meanwhile, Baisley batted .298 with nine homers and 44 RBIs in 81 contests with Sacramento this season, and then went 8-for-16 (.500) with a pair of jacks in the club's postseason stint. He was originally drafted in the 12th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft and will be making his big league debut.
