A rough ending to an otherwise rock-solid rookie season for Blackburn, who finished with a 4.05 ERA, a 96/39 K/BB ratio and a 1.36 WHIP over 193 1/3 innings. His stuff isn't overpowering, but he showed enough craftiness (45 percent GB rate, 1.82 BB/9) to consider grabbing him in the late rounds of 2009 mixed-league drafts.
Nick Blackburn was masterful on Tuesday night limiting the White Sox to just one run over 6.1 innings, but he was let down by an offense that failed to score a single run in a 1-0 loss to the Sox.Blackburn ends his rookie season with an 11-11 record and a 4.05 ERA over 193.1 innings. He doesn't strike anyone out with a K/9 under five, but he figures to be a serviceable end of the rotation option for years to come.
News: Given one final start on Tuesday, Twins SP Nick Blackburn couldn't defeat the White Sox as Chicago is headed for the playoffs and the Twins headed home. Blackburn fell to 11-11 on the year as he allowed just one run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings. The one that got away was a solo home run from Jim Thome. He walked three and had three strikeouts. His ERA is 4.05.
Analysis: Blackburn defeated the White Sox last Wednesday in what could have been his final start. He may have lost on Tuesday, but he pitched well enough to win and end his 2008 on a high note. He'll never get many strikeouts, but he has the potential to become a stable major-league pitcher. Consider him nothing more than a late-rounder in 2009
Nick Blackburn took the loss Tuesday even after limiting the White Sox to one run in 6 1/3 innings. Blackburn had struggled of late, giving up 14 runs in 10 1/3 innings during his final three starts, but he stepped up in a big way tonight. Unfortunately for him, John Danks was even better.
