Byrd's allowed double-digit hits in two of his last three outings, an apparent indication that he's begun to leave his pitches up in the zone with regularity. The veteran right-hander, who exits September with a 4.85 ERA over 29 2/3 frames, will have to improve on his recent efforts if he hopes to provide the Red Sox with quality postseason innings.
Paul Byrd surrendered four runs in five innings Wednesday in a no-decision against the Indians. Byrd gave up 11 hits to his former team. He's allowed 12 runs and 27 hits over 16 innings in his last three starts, so neither he nor Tim Wakefield has presented a particularly strong case for occupying the fourth spot in the postseason rotation. Byrd will enter the October with an 11-12 record and a 4.60 ERA.
News: Boston SP Paul Byrd did not factor into the decision on Wednesday against the Indians. Byrd allowed four runs on 11 hits over five innings. He walked one and had four K's.
Analysis: Byrd is a mediocre Fantasy pitcher at best, but he usually doesn't get blown out, enabling him to win a decent number of games as long as he pitches for a good team. Still, he's better off left for AL-only leagues
Anthony Castrovince, of MLB.com, reports Boston Red Sox SP Paul Byrd is 1-2 with a 6.05 ERA in three starts at Fenway Park this season.
