The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Pittsburgh Pirates SP Paul Maholm may be the only pitcher in the starting rotation with a guaranteed job come 2009, according to general manager Neal Huntington.
Pirates hired Joe Kerrigan as pitching coach. Kerrigan, who was previously pitching coach for the Red Sox, Phillies and Expos, takes over for Jeff Andrews. He has a tough job ahead of him after the Pirates ranked dead last in the league with a 5.10 ERA while handing out the NL's most walks, but does have some young talent to work with in Paul Maholm, Ian Snell, Tom Gorzelanny and Zach Duke.
Maholm came into his own as a reliable mixed-league option and the default ace of Pittsburgh's staff. It's hard to imagine him improving much more, though, given his lack of overpowering stuff. At best, better run support could result in a few extra wins.
Pirates fired pitching coach Jeff Andrews. Pittsburgh's pitching staff ranked dead last among NL teams in ERA and walks, and second-worst in strikeouts. Andrews oversaw a breakthrough season from Paul Maholm, but Tom Gorzelanny and Ian Snell also regressed under his watch.
Paul Maholm finishes up his season at 9-9 after falling to the Brewers on Wednesday night. Maholm allowed four runs -- three earned -- over six innings while struggling with his command. He issued six walks and threw only 53 of 96 pitches for strikes. He walked six his last time out as well, but control hasn't been a huge issue for him this year in general. He ends his season with a 3.71 ERA and 1.28 WHIP.
