News: Yankees SP Phil Hughes, passed over for an open spot in the rotation as he rehabs from a rib injury at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, showed his disappointment in a rehab start Friday. He needed 86 pitches to go 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and a walk.
Analysis: Hughes might still get a shot with the big-league club come September, so don't cut him if you've stashed him this long. He still has top-prospect potential
News: According to the LoHud.com Yankees blog, Carl Pavano has been told by the Yankees that he will start against the Orioles on Saturday. It had been speculated that either he or Phil Hughes would get that start. "He worked extremely hard to put himself in this position, to get back and help the this club," agent Tom O'Connell told the Newark Star-Ledger. "He's really excited about the opportunity and he's up to the challenge."
Analysis: Pavano is an injury-risk sleeper for deeper leagues at this point. His three-percent ownership on CBSSports.com should rise considerably. The Yankees can get him run support. Heck, if Sidney Ponson is owned by 27 percent of leagues, Pavano is a buy-now guy. Hughes will still get a rotation look in September and he has a great shot at impacting all Fantasy leagues
George A. King III, of the New York Post, reports New York Yankees SP Phil Hughes (rib, flu) has been slowed by a flu bug recently and was unable to make a start with the Yankees Saturday, Aug. 23.
Status: D.L.. Return August
MLB.com reports that the Yankees will go with either Phil Hughes or Carl Pavano for Saturday's start against the Orioles. Both pitchers made minor league rehab appearances Sunday, so they're on the same schedule. Pavano has pitched better than Hughes of late, but hasn't started a big league game since April of last season.
Numbers in parenthesis for each team indicates total runs scored that game. Numbers next to each pitcher indicates earned runs.
The run differential is based on total runs each team scored when Phil Hughes has a decision. (i.e. win/loss) Similarly, the opposing pitcher listed also received a decision.
