He has yet to live up to the potential he clearly possesses, so maybe 2009 is the year fantasy owners can watch him blossom.

He was clocked at 95 mph in some of his starts and struck out 38 while walking 13 in 30 innings pitched. Hughes could potentially enter the 2009 season on the team's big league roster.

In his seven starts, he faced the circuit's worst offense four times and the next-to-worst twice.

Ken Rosenthal, of FOXSports.com, reports the New York Yankees have zero interest in trading SP Phil Hughes in the offseason.

Hughes is making a strong case for a spot in the Yankees rotation. The injury-plagued right-hander has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his six appearances, holding batters to a .233 average in his first five starts. His 3.60 ERA is mostly the result of an Oct. 18 loss to Scottsdale in which he surrendered seven runs in 2 2/3 frames.

The Yankees could potentially benefit from Atlanta's hesitancy to deal top prospects for Peavy, especially if they opt to include Phil Hughes. The Padres are reportedly not interested in second baseman Robinson Cano.

Analysis: Hughes has ace potential and will enter 2009 as a nice late-round sleeper in Fantasy after his poor showing in 2008. Obviously, pitching for the Yankees remains a best-case scenario because of the run support he'd get, but a trade wouldn't ruin his Fantasy value either

Phil Hughes struck out eight in five scoreless innings Monday for the Javelinas of the AFL. Hughes missed his start last week because of a torn fingernail, but it obviously wasn't a problem in this one. He threw 41 of his 59 pitches for strikes and didn't walk a batter in the game. He entered with a 5.68 ERA and eight walks in 12 2/3 innings.
