MLB.com reports Yankees SP Phil Hughes, who was placed on the 15-day DL Thursday because of a rib injury, will summon his inner Rick Vaughn when he returns to the hill in July. Hughes visited a Connecticut optometrist Friday and discovered he is "slightly nearsighted." Upon his return from the DL, Hughes will sport a pair of glasses when pitching, a look Charlie Sheen's character -- Vaughn -- in the movie Major League made famous. "I'll look like I went to college," Hughes said.

Phil Hughes has a stress fracture in one of his ribs, and the New York Yankees' pitcher is expected to be sidelined until at least July. Hughes, placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, had an MRI exam that revealed the stress fracture in the ninth rib on his right side. He will be shut down for four weeks and then re-evaluated. General manager Brian Cashman said the team probably can't expect the 21-year-old right-hander to return before July. Hughes is 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in six starts this year.

Yankees place Hughes on 15-day DL

Yankees starter Phil Hughes was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday night with a strained right oblique muscle. Hughes lasted just 3 2/3 innings in a 6-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. Both general manager Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi were guarded when asked about the 21-year-old Hughes before the Yankees' game against Detroit on Wednesday. The club announced during the game that the right-hander was headed for the DL. "We obviously went through a tough time last night and he's struggling so we've had some discussions earlier today and we'll get together and have some further ones," Cashman said earlier Wednesday. Cashman later announced that Darrell Rasner will be recalled from the minors to fill in for Hughes Sunday against the Mariners.
