Cubs place OF Johnson on DL

The Cubs placed Reed Johnson on the DL Tuesday with back spasms.Johnson had said he was feeling better and didn't think he needed a DL stint, but the Cubs needed to make a move to clear a spot for Sean Marshall, tonight's starter.

As expected, the Cubs recalled Sean Marshall from Triple-A Iowa Tuesday. He is starting tonight's game against the Orioles. Reed Johnson was put on the DL to make room on the roster.Marshall is taking the place of the injured Carlos Zambrano. He's in line for another start this weekend.

Reed Johnson is likely to be placed on the DL to make room on the roster for Sean Marshall, who will be recalled to start on Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. Johnson hasn't played since last Tuesday because of back spasms.The Cubs could use Johnson with Alfonso Soriano still out, but at least the move can be backdated. He would be eligible to return on July 3.
