Inconsistency dogged Oswalt before the midsummer pause (4.56 ERA), but an outstanding second-half performance (10-2, 2.24) gave the Astros ace his eighth straight season with a sub-4.00 ERA. Excellent command makes him a Top 25 starter going into 2009.

The Associated Press reports the Houston Astros would face the Chicago Cubs Monday, Sept. 29, if the Astros are within a half-game of the wild card lead. SP Roy Oswalt would start that game if necessary.

The Associated Press reports Houston Astros SP Roy Oswalt allowed two hits and struck out three in six innings to lead the Astros to an 8-6 victory Thursday, Sept. 25. Oswalt has won 23 of 24 decisions against Cincinnati.

Working on three days' rest, Roy Oswalt surrendered one run and two hits over six innings to improve to 23-1 lifetime against the Reds on Thursday. Oswalt didn't come back on short rest just so he could face his favorite opponents. The Astros are still technically in the race and would have Oswalt pitch Monday if their makeup game against the Cubs is necessary. Of course, for that to happen, the Astros would have to win out and the Mets and Brewers would have to lose each of their next three. As a result, it's practically certain that Oswalt will end the year with his current 17-10 record and 3.54 ERA.
