John Hickey, of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, reports Seattle Mariners SP Ryan Rowland-Smith could be added to the Australian roster for the World Baseball Classic next year.
Seattle is short on starters, so Rowland-Smith will have a chance to lock down a rotation spot in 2009. Just don't get carred away by his ERA, as '09 will likely be a learning experience.
Seattle Mariners SP Ryan Rowland-Smith allowed three runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings Saturday, Sept. 27, against the Oakland Athletics, according to The Associated Press. He walked two and struck out five, improving to 5-3 on the season.
News: Seattle SP Ryan Rowland-Smith won in his final start of the season on Saturday over the A's. Rowland-Smith (5-3) allowed three runs on nine hits over 6 2/3 innings. He walked two and had five strikeouts. His ERA is 3.42 on the year.
Analysis: Rowland-Smith's 2008 is over now and he was a pretty good piece for the Mariners this season. He looks like a nice Fantasy sleeper heading into 2009 for the M's
Another solid effort from Rowland-Smith, who notched his first win since Aug. 31. He's certainly merited more, as he'd allowed a total of eight runs over his last four starts -- three no-decisions and a loss. However, he's been plagued by an anemic Mariners offense that gave him just 10 runs of support in those outings. With a cumulative 3.42 ERA and .249 batting average against in 47 appearances (12 starts), the 25-year-old lefty is worth monitoring next year.
