Gallagher pitches seven strong innings in win

Sean Gallagher outpitched Hiroki Kuroda, and Aramis Ramirez and Kosuke Fukudome capped a three-run seventh with run scoring hits to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on a frigid Tuesday night. Gallagher (2-1) allowed one run and four hits in a career-high seven innings while striking out three and walking two. The only run he allowed came on a Blake Dewitt RBI single in the fourth inning.

Gallagher will get at least two more starts

Cubs SP Sean Gallagher could not hold a 3-0 lead Wednesday against the Astros and took the 5-3 loss after a four-run third inning, highlighted by a Carlos N. Lee three-run homer. Miguel Tejada's grounder bounced off Gallagher's right shin for a run-scoring single in the third inning that made it 3-1. Cubs trainers examined Gallagher's leg after the hit, but he remained in the game and appeared to be OK. Lee's 10th home run scored Kaz Matsui and Tejada to put Houston on top 4-3. "Gallagher's got a nice arm," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "He's got a better arm than I thought he had. Today he got ahead of hitters a lot, but he couldn't put them away. Of course that breaking ball to Lee is not so bad. Lee makes $100 million doing those sorts of things."

Sean Gallagher (1-0) earned his first major league win in his second start for Chicago, as the Cubs beat Pittsburgh Friday. He allowed one run and four hits before pitcher Carlos Zambrano pinch-hit for him in the sixth. After making eight relief appearances last season, the 22-year-old Gallagher was a late fill-in for Zambrano against Arizona on Sunday after rain delayed the start.

Cubs RHP Sean Gallagher will make his second start of the season on Friday against the Pirates. Gallagher pitched 4 1/3 innings in a no decision against the Diamondbacks on Sunday. Gallagher made a spot start for Carlos Zambrano, who was a late scratch because of wet weather.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that rookie Sean Gallagher will likely take Jon Lieber's spot in the Cubs' rotation after his outing on Sunday. ''We have a decision to make on what we'll do, but I don't see why we can't pitch Gallagher against Pittsburgh on his next turn,'' Piniella said. ''We'll see. I have to talk to (pitching coach Larry Rothschild). But I think he'll stay in the rotation and (Jon) Lieber will move into the bullpen.''
