Jeff Samardzija has been called up to Triple-A to take the rotation spot of Sean Marshall, according to the Chicago Tribune. "His last five outings have been real good," said Oneri Fleita, Cubs vice president of player personnel after watching Samardzija produce a 2.63 ERA in that time.The question of whether or not Jeff would be pitching in Wrigley also came up and the answer was that his production would dictate where he does his work for the remainder of the 2008 season.

Marshall had to leave last Thursday's Minor League start after 3 2/3 innings because of his hamstring. He had given up five runs on six hits in the 8-3 loss to Omaha. He was placed on the Iowa team's seven-day disabled list.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the reason the Cubs sent down pitcher Sean Marshall to Triple-A Iowa was to stretch him out for a return to a starting role. "We want [Marshall] to start and stretch him out," manager Lou Piniella said Friday after Marshall was sent to Triple-A Iowa and lefty reliever Scott Eyre was activated from the disabled list. "He'll stay a starter. We pitched him out of the bullpen out of necessity coming out of spring training [because of Eyre's inflamed elbow]."

Sean Marshall could make a spot start on Sunday, if Jason Marquis is not recovered from his strep throat, according to MLB.com.Marshall registered a save out of the bullpen this season, but was a starter during spring training, and he could handle it if Marquis ultimately cannot go.
Sean Marshall has been recalled from Triple-A Iowa, according to the AP. To make room for Marshall, the team optioned rookie lefty Carmen Pignatiello to Iowa.Marshall holds limited fantasy value as of now.
