The Associated Press reports San Diego Padres SP Shawn Estes cleared outright waivers and chose to become a free agent.
News: The Padres opened space on their 40-man roster on Monday when catcher Josh Bard and SP Shawn Estes cleared outright waivers and chose to become free agents.
Analysis: The 35-year-old Estes, who didn't pitch in the majors in 2007 while rehabbing from reconstructive elbow surgery, began the season at Triple-A Portland before his contract was purchased by the Padres on May 8. He was 2-3 with a 4.74 ERA in nine appearances, including eight starts. Estes was sidelined for more than two months with a broken left thumb. Estes has an aging arm that was never overpowering in the first place. If he breaks camp with a team, he will be nothing more than a low-end flier for the deepest of leagues
Shawn Estes cleared waivers on Monday and decided to become a free agent, according to the Associated Press.Estes only made it out to the hill for 43.2 innings due to a couple of injuries, and even when healthy his performance was less than ideal (4.74 ERA, 1.56 WHIP). He will likely latch on with someone because he is left-handed, but don't look for anything more than you saw from him this season.
San Diego Padres SP Shawn Estes allowed six hits and two runs in 3 2/3 innings while walking three and striking out two, according to The Associated Press. The Padres lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 12-4, on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
Shawn Estes lasted 3 2/3 innings and allowed two runs Wednesday in a loss to the Dodgers. Nomar Garciaparra's homer was one of six hits he gave up. Estes turned in solid outings in four of his first five starts for the Padres (with a three-month DL stint mixed in), but he was completely ineffective his last three times out, leaving him 2-3 with a 4.74 ERA. He'll likely have to settle for another minor league contract as a free agent this winter.
