Beat writer Thomas Harding speculates that Manuel Corpas will open the 2009 season as the Rockies closer with Taylor Buchholz close on his heels, according to the Rockies Official Website.Corpas was awful early on and eventually ended the year with a 4.52 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and a 5.65 K/9 mark while Taylor clearly outperformed all of those numbers (2.17 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and a 7.60 K/9). However, Corpas was the teams choice at the start of 2008 so it only figures that they would give him another shot in 2009.
Troy E. Renck, of The Denver Post, reports Colorado Rockies RP Taylor Buchholz is expected to return to the team in 2009.
It was only recently revealed that Buchholz had been experiencing significant pain his right shoulder over the past two weeks. Though an MRI revealed nothing more than a small strain, the Rockies didn't want to risk the health of Buchholz, who was dominant for much of the season as a setup man for closer Brian Fuentes. "It just needs rest for right now," Buchholz said. "The offseason's coming up, and it should be good to go by Spring Training." The 26-year-old has been nothing short of automatic this season. His 2.17 ERA is the fifth lowest by a reliever in the National League, and his .188 average against is fourth lowest.
The Denver Post's Patrick Saunders reports Colorado Rockies RP Taylor Buchholz (shoulder) is done for the season. "There is inflammation in the shoulder and it's bothered me for about a week-and-a-half," Buchholz said. "We are trying to get it better and find out what's going on, at least." Buchholz said he would get an MRI in the next few days and then discuss treatment options.
Taylor Buchholz has been shut down for the season with right shoulder inflammation. He's scheduled to undergo an MRI exam later this week. Buchholz had a breakout season while moving to the bullpen full time, posting a 2.17 ERA and 56/18 K/BB ratio in 66 1/3 innings to emerge as the Rockies' most reliable setup man. With closer Brian Fuentes likely departing via free agency, Buchholz may get a chance to compete with Manny Corpas for the closer job.Source: Denver Post
