The Associated Press' George Henry reports Atlanta Braves SP Tom Glavine (elbow) said he is undecided about whether he'll pitch in 2009. Glavine, speaking on Tuesday, Aug. 26, said he only has a little soreness after undergoing season-ending elbow surgery last week. His plan is to first see how his recovery goes before making any decisions. We've got a good five weeks here for me to rehab and get a good sense of how I'm recovering and what it looks like, said Glavine. Then I think we will all have a better idea. Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery, which consisted of cleaning out scar tissue and sewing together a tiny gap that had formed in his tendon. Glavine's left flexor tendon had not moved away from the bone, as the team had originally thought. No bone spurs were found in the elbow. Finally, Andrews also checked out Glavine's left shoulder and verified there was no damage to the rotator cuff, just minor scraping in the rotator cuff and labrum. Glavine will be performing range-of-motion and passive-resistance exercises for his elbow and shoulder.
News: Braves pitcher Tom Glavine said he is just a little sore after having season-ending elbow surgery last week and is unsure whether he'll pitch next season. The 300-game winner said he'll wait to see how his recovery goes before deciding whether he will try to return for his 23rd season. "We've got a good five weeks here for me to rehab and get a good sense of how I'm recovering and what it looks like," Glavine said. "Then I think we will all have a better idea."
Analysis: Glavine isn't under contract for next season and only wants to pitch for Atlanta, close to his home and family. He had said he'd retire if he needed elbow ligament replacement surgery because the "Tommy John" procedure often requires at least a year of rehab. Glavine gave up seven runs in four innings last Thursday in an 11-7 loss to the Chicago Cubs, his first start since spending two months on the disabled list. He is 2-4 with a 5.54 ERA in 13 starts this season and 305-203 in his career. Cut and ignore the Hall of Famer in all leagues at this point. He will be a low-end Fantasy option heading into 2009
