Earlier this week, Rays vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman told The St. Petersburg Times, "I don't feel we'll be in position to acquire a proven closer with the resources we have." That means the health of Percival, who's signed to a $4 million contract for 2009, will greatly affect the depth at the back end of Tampa Bay's bullpen. Cohen said if Percival would undergo surgery, he'd like to have it as soon as possible, so he'd be ready for Opening Day.

Troy Percival is expected to decide whether he will opt for surgery on his back and right knee by next week, according to MLB.com.The 39-year-old is going through his regular rehab, but isn't throwing because it is too early in the off-season. He will see more doctors before making a final decision. The team does not believe they will have the resources to sign a top free agent closer and may have to settle for more frugal choices, such as Kyle Farnsworth, Eddie Guardado, or Keith Foulke, to name a few.

Alden Gonzalez, of MLB.com, reports Tampa Bay Rays CL Troy Percival (back, knee) will decide if he will undergo back and right knee surgeries next week, according to his agent, Paul Cohen. Percival is currently going through his normal rehab, but is not throwing because it is too early in the offseason. If he decides to undergo surgery, he will do it as soon as possible so he can be ready for Spring Training.
